Following is an excerpt from William Cohn’s article:
The releases of Putin’s high profile foes underscored the arbitrariness of the Russian justice system. The rule of law requires an engaged civil society with the breathing space to demand accountability of those in power, which in turn requires independent institutions serving the people. That Putin could so rapidly get Parliament to pass an Amnesty law and the Judiciary to order the release of prisoners exposes the travesty of Russian justice…
The torture memos by John Yoo, Jay Bybee, and Steven Bradbury were written because CIA criminality was exposed by leaks, so the Bush cabal felt they needed legal cover. Had Jane Mayer and Dana Priest not used leaked information to write about the outsourcing of torture and secret CIA-run prisons in Europe, no such twisted law, logic and morality as evinced by those memos would be needed…
Judge Claire Egan’s August 29, 2013 opinion endorsing the legality of NSA metadata surveillance is an abdication of the duties of an independent judiciary. She calls the issue a political question, not a legal one: “a matter for the political branches to decide.” The statutory analysis in the opinion is flawed. Indeed, it is for the courts to decide when an act is unconstitutional. Three co-equal branches, right? And, the power of judicial review is the final constitutional check against abuse. Yet for more than seven years, the law was completely silent as the national security state accreted ever- greater illegitimate power. Her lame legal justification for NSA metadata collection was compelled by public protest…
Law demands accountability. Secrecy affords impunity. While big brother is zooming you, zoom on him and tell the world what you see. Let the sun shine in. From Sochi to your home state raise your voice at this travesty of justice, while you still can.
My online response to the above linked-to article follows:
Darkness is it’s own reward. Corporatist leaders are wolves among sheep (which doesn’t mean that all sheep are equally righteous). As Jesus noted, They want to be called ‘Benefactors’. But they are of benefit, in limited ways, to themselves only, for which reason Jesus also told his followers to not be like them (Luke 22:24,25). They are ‘made men’ (http://bit.ly/1eX8nUi) who had enough sense, and opportunity, to get made and placed in relatively comfortable and safe positions in this violent, godless, upside down (http://bit.ly/L9VGuU) world. Some criminals end up controlling prostitution rings, working for those who do, running drug cartels or working for those who do, etc.. Others become honorable members of Parliament. Or bankers. Or American Presidents.
But whatever rung of the ladder you find yourself on in this dark, godless world, When you spend your life lying, manipulating and exploiting, you don’t end up principled and caring. Nor do you end up brilliant and clean. Your freedom to call the worst hypocrisy and evil ‘brilliance’ and ‘moral integrity’ now doesn’t even cause you to flinch. Not even Seven Of Nine would detect any physiological changes in your body and demeanor when you say the vilest things in public. Well, She might note that you got a bit of thrill in doing it.
Obama is a stunning hypocrite. Stephen Harper seems to be jealous and tries to outdo him, going to Israel (http://bit.ly/1hAWnYI) to fawn over and praise Nazis and call those who object to fascism and human rights abuses “sickening” (http://bit.ly/1f04EWH). Both of those losers have George W. Bush envy and he had Hitler envy.
Barack Obama and Stephen Harper and thousands of other such ‘leaders’ may indeed be clever folks. In their own minds they are. Their adoring families – who can’t save them from God’s judgment I’m sorry to report – believe that they are brilliant, wise, wonderful and strong and that is adoration that they will accept, partly because as far as their self-modification goes, there’s still human (light) elements there, for which reason you won’t see Obama or Harper gaze into their children’s eyes and declare that they are proud, powerful, blood-spilling fascists. But that’s in fact what they are. But you and I can point that out for them.
Generally, The Right babbles at us because it has embraced darkness. (And if rightists think that it might be cool to try righteousness for a change – and, say, denounce the security/surveillance system they were [are still?] supporting – let them. But you can’t get back a soul you’ve sold nor simply wish away a wild beast that you’ve raised, fed, worshipped and is now bigger than anything humans can deal with if they want to. – http://bit.ly/KTUj2P) Rightists, adopting the rebellious, arrogant attitude of the builders of the Tower of Babel who addressed God’s instruction to mankind at the beginning to spread out and populate the earth and said, essentially, “Let’s stay in one spot and build a huge tower that will make us famous instead,” babble at the people who they abuse, lie to and help their private sector partners exploit precisely because they have so much freedom and power and know it. Their attitude toward us when they babble at us is “What will you do about it?”
Stephen Harper completely flips around the language of abuser and victim so as to apply the description of the (collective) abuser, namely his Israeli Nazi friends (whose admiration means so much to him, evidently), to the Israeli state’s victims. It’s all normal for him, now, as Seven would attest.
From “Stephen Harper vows loyalty to Israel in speech to Knesset” by Laura Payton, the following:
“Some civil-society leaders today call for a boycott of Israel…. Most disgracefully of all, some openly call Israel an apartheid state. Think about that. Think about the twisted logic and outright malice behind that.
“A state, based on freedom, democracy and the rule of law, that was founded so Jews can flourish as Jews, and seek shelter from the shadow of the worst racist experiment in history,” he said.
“That is condemned, and that condemnation is masked in the language of anti-racism. It is nothing short of sickening.”
Harper allowed that criticism of Israeli government policy isn’t in and of itself “necessarily anti-Semitic.”
“But what else can we call criticism that selectively condemns only
the Jewish state and effectively denies its right to defend itself while
systematically ignoring – or excusing – the violence and oppression all around it?”
“This is the face of the new anti-Semitism. It targets the Jewish
people by targeting Israel and attempts to make the old bigotry
acceptable for a new generation.”
The experts say there is no connection between the word ‘babble’ and Babel. Fair enough. Outside of the area of language there’s a connection.
