It is hard to imagine anything so nauseating as a group of affluent liberals defending the mass murder of poor colonized people in the name of democracy and security. Though a species of moral turpitude associated with 19th century colonial tropes, in 2018 it remains very much alive under the banner of the UK Labour Friends of Israel (LFI)…

Yet, as if to confirm the truth that colonialism is the toilet of the human soul, Labour Friends of Israel – a group of avowed Israel-supporting Labour Party MPs and officials – in a tweet subsequently removed amid the deluge of criticism it incurred, sought to defend this massacre by raising the spectre of Hamas…

“Canada Moving to Exempt Majority of New Oilsands Projects From Federal Assessments” by James Wilt ( via Canadian Dimension)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

After more than a year of public hearings, the federal government unveiled its new and improved environmental assessment legislation in February 2018 with much ado.

But the new rules — designed to restore public trust in Canada’s process for reviewing major projects — didn’t contain any details on what kinds of projects would trigger a review under the new legislation.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna skirted the issue, saying her ministry was still evaluating what kinds of activities would show up on a yet-to-be-released “project list” that was pending further consultation with Canadians.

But when pressed on the issue, McKenna told reporters she didn’t believe oilsands projects developed via in-situ methods should be included.

“Canada’s right-wing rage machine vs. Nora Loreto” by David Gray-Donald (Briarpatch)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

“On the evening of April 6, a horrific highway crash occurred on Highway 35 in rural Saskatchewan. The crash would take the lives of 16 individuals on the team bus of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.

The loss of life is tragic, and in its aftermath, there has been an enormous outpouring of support for the families, including the largest-ever GoFundMe campaign in Canadian history.

There has also been major discussion on social media of the comments of journalist Nora Loreto…

After these tweets, the reaction to Loreto’s earlier observation started picking up. Isolated from the rest of the thread, people began sharing the tweet “I’m trying to not get cynical about what is a totally devastating tragedy but the maleness, the youthfulness and the whiteness of the victims are, of course, playing a significant role,” and expressing their anger at the decontextualized thought that Loreto was presenting.

In response, Loreto added a tweet to her original thread to make clear that her comment was not “a horse race.”

Loreto then also commented that the site of the Broncos crash was the location of six other deaths…

The vast majority of responses on Twitter expressed outrage and hostility that Loreto had made an observation on the uneven distribution of grief and support. The messages to Loreto were especially violent and graphic, and, it seems, mostly from white men:

From The Council of Canadians website:
While the Liberal party prepares for the next federal election, government lawyers are working hard to defend the voter suppression measures enacted by the Harper Government in the so-called Fair Elections Act.

“Why are Liberals Defending the (Un)Fair Elections Act?” by ? (The Council of Canadians)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

“Justin Trudeau promised to repeal the undemocratic provisions in the Unfair Elections Act. Not only have the Liberals not moved Bill C-33 forward, but their lawyers are now playing serious hardball with us in court,” says Andrea Furlong, Executive Director of the Council of Canadians. “The government’s legal team may as well still be taking their orders from former Prime Minister Harper, because they’re doing the opposite of what Trudeau promised. We are calling on the Liberal government to pass Bill C-33 before wasting any more money defending the indefensible.”

“New FCC Advisor Arrested For Fraud” by Arianna Gael (Filehippo)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

The current US presidential administration has faced a lot of backlash over some of its more notable appointees, but when its troubles with the tech industry collided with those appointees, it made news. Following last year’s net neutrality fiasco, the Federal Communications Commission’s Ajit Pai established a federal advisory board to purportedly help the FCC make better decisions where consumers and their communications are concerned.

Unfortunately, his top dog for broadband has been arrested for fraud.

Elizabeth Pierce, one of the 30-member panel members on the Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee, was the CEO of fiber optic cable supplier Quintillion…

““They Eat Money”: How Mandela’s Political Heirs Grow Rich Off Corruption” by Norimitsu Onishi and Selam Gebrekidan (New York Times via Black Agenda Report)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

==== === == =
The nation was governed for nine years by the scandal-plagued President Jacob Zuma, whose close ties with the Gupta family — three Indian brothers at the helm of a sprawling business empire built on government contracts, including the dairy farm — outraged voters. Their cozy relationship contributed to the A.N.C.’s recent electoral losses and helped lead to Mr. Zuma’s ouster two months ago.

Promising a “new dawn,” Mr. Zuma’s replacement, Cyril Ramaphosa, has said that he would make fighting corruption a priority as the nation’s new president. But he is also a veteran A.N.C. insider, and the early signs have not been encouraging…

The endless scandals have also raised serious questions about the complicity of major Western companies, with multiple investigations scrutinizing the role they may have played in enabling corruption and weakening the country’s institutions…

International banks have been ensnared in the scandals, too…

Many trace the deep corruption in the nation to a fundamental flaw in South Africa’s transition from white rule to democracy a generation ago. In the grand bargain struck between the apartheid government and the A.N.C., headed by Nelson Mandela, a transfer of power was carried out peacefully, disproving predictions of civil war and earning Mr. Mandela accolades as a visionary peacemaker.

But the deal was reached on what many South Africans today consider Pyrrhic terms: The black majority was allowed to control politics, but much of the country’s economic resources, including land, has remained in the hands of white South Africans and a small group of other elites.

In the early years of A.N.C. rule, Mr. Mandela and other top leaders, who had helped defeat apartheid but had no personal savings, received houses, vehicles and money from white business leaders — essentially bribes, critics say.

“In Photos: While the world watches Gaza, Israeli forces invade Nabi Saleh” by Anne Paq and Heidi Motola (Mondoweiss)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

On Friday, April 20, the Israeli soldiers invaded the village at the beginning of the afternoon, triggering clashes with Palestinian youth, who responded with stones to make the soldiers leave. The clashes lasted several hours, during which the Israeli soldiers shot scores of tear gas, fired rubber-coated metal bullets and live ammunition that wounded two of the protesters. At some point, the Israeli soldiers pretended to be leaving, while some soldiers were still hiding in a garage in order to catch and arrest some protesters… The soldiers also harassed Belal Tamimi, a known activist from the village, as well as other photographers and journalist, trying to prevent them from documenting the events…

While the soldiers were pretending to leave, one soldier turned to a woman, Nawal Tamimi, and with a big smile said: “thank you.” Nawal, a resident of Nabi Saleh, was standing next to her brother, Belal Tamimi, and both were just being harrassed by the soldiers, who pushed them, shoved mobile phones to their faces filming them from close range, and called Nawal a “whore” in Arabic.

“BSNews is ‘Russian Backed’ and is Reported to OFCOM: We Respond” by Mike Raddie (BSNews)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

…co-editors Mike Raddie and Alison Banville – received the following email today via the contact page on our website:

From: James McAlea
Subject: From Contact Us

“Just watched your Editor on RT news and he was a total disgrace! His comments and this website are total bullshit and a pose a direct danger to Democracy. But then you and your Russian backers are masters of disinformation…”

Greatly concerned about these accusations and desperate to rehabilitate ourselves in the eyes of this responsible citizen – and also hopefully mitigate any punishment by OFCOM [Office of Communications], a body we both fear and respect – Mike Raddie responded with the urgency such an indictment deserves; almost immediately, in fact, after he’d made himself a nice curry, drank a few glasses of wine, and finished re-watching the last three episodes of Breaking Bad.

“Lost the Plot: UK Gov Accuses Human Beings of Being ‘Russian Bots’” by ? (21st Century Wire)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Ian Shilling, who goes by the handle of @Ian56789, was condemned as a “Russian bot” by the British government before being targeted by numerous mainstream media outlets who ran with the government’s rather bizarre official conspiracy theory.

The bogus UK government report was then parroted by the mainstream media, not surprisingly, led by The Guardian newspaper who ran with the government’s fake news and disinformation campaign (The Guardian still has not printed a retraction).

To be clear, real people – who Corporatocracy governments and their allies and tools don’t like – are being accused of being Russian ‘bots’, or programming. And they seem to be counting on the dullness of most people to not care enough to look into the accusations or even sense that something’s amiss. When the lies are being exposed, it’s usually on alt media, which dull people are probably afraid of since authorities who they trust call all news but their’s ‘fake’.
