“Haifa activists vow to continue protests following ‘brutal’ police crackdown” by Jaclynn Ashly (Mondoweiss)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Enraged and saddened by images from Gaza last week, when the Israeli military killed at least 62 people in a single day, Palestinian citizens of Israel protested on Friday in the coastal city of Haifa to demand an end to Israeli violence and the more than decade-long siege that has strangled Gaza into a humanitarian crisis.

Unlike similar peaceful marches held in Tel Aviv by predominately Jewish-Israeli protesters in days prior, in Haifa the estimated 500 demonstrators were met with riot police, widespread arrests and one human rights worker sustained a broken knee.

“The first reaction of the police to stop the demonstration was to use violence,” Bashar Ali, 22, a student studying social and political science at Tel Aviv University, told Mondoweiss.

“Canada Bans Venezuelan Expats from Casting Ballots” by ? (TeleSUR English via Venezuelanalysis)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

|o
Canada is prohibiting its Venezuelan residents from voting in the coming May 20 presidential elections, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said during a press conference Wednesday.

Canadian authorities said they will not allow Venezuelan embassies or consulates in the cities of Toronto, Ottawa or Vancouver to install polling stations.

“They denounce that there is a dictatorship in Venezuela, but who is denying the right to vote? Only dictatorship countries do not allow citizens to exercise their right to vote, so I ask if Venezuela –according to some world nations – is a dictatorship, how is it that today Canada intends to curtail Venezuelans’ right to vote?

“Who is preventing here the right to suffrage and to vote, the government of Venezuela or the government of Canada?” Arreaza said.

And it didn’t work. Canadian fascists didn’t get their wish for the Right to steal Venezuela, although they continue with their evil, lawless efforts.

“How the Pentagon Paid for NFL Displays of Patriotism” by Emma Niles (Truthdig)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

A key component is missing from the current controversial discussion surrounding football players and the national anthem. In the recent days of argument over whether NFL players have the right to protest racial inequality and systemic injustice in the United States, few have brought up the fact that less than a decade ago, professional football players didn’t even appear on the field during the national anthem.

That changed in 2009, as the Department of Defense poured millions of dollars into the NFL in exchange for displays of patriotism during games. “Until 2009, no NFL player stood for the national anthem because players actually stayed in the locker room as the anthem played,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith explained in 2016. “The players were moved to the field during the national anthem because it was seen as a marketing strategy to make the athletes look more patriotic. The United States Department of Defense paid the National Football League $5.4 million between 2011 and 2014, and the National Guard $6.7 million between 2013 and 2015 to stage onfield patriotic ceremonies as part of military-recruitment budget line items.”

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy later confirmed that players did not appear on field for the anthem until 2009, and Vice notes that Smith’s claim was checked by an ESPN researcher.

“Why Canada’s white supremacists want Doug Ford to win” by Ethan Cox, Derrick O’Keefe, Erin Seatter (Ricochet)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

=-=-=—
“Hey, I hope you guys are ready for Ford Nation!” That’s the co-host of the most popular white supremacist podcast in Canada introducing an episode recorded in early March, just days after a tightly contested convention gave Doug Ford the leadership of the Ontario PC party.

That giddy white supremacist, who used the alias League of the North, was unmasked earlier this month in a Vice investigation as Thomas White of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

The Liberals put out a press release noting that Ford had been endorsed by the podcast Nazis. The PC party quickly disavowed their support, and the media largely ignored the story.

But it’s part of a troubling trend. Far-right figures and groups, from the explicitly white supremacist to the more crypto-fascist, have not been shy in proclaiming their support for “Ford Nation” and their belief that Doug Ford could create an opening for white supremacist activity similar to the effect of Donald Trump in the United States.

“U.S. walks out of UN Disarmament Forum – because Syria was allowed to speak” by ? (21st Century Wire)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

(o
The United States staged a walkout in protest at Syria’s presidency of the Conference on Disarmament at the United Nations in Geneva on Tuesday.

The delegation stood from their seats as the Syrian ambassador to the U.N., Hussam Edin Aala opened the latest round of the conference.

[Robert] Wood said Syria’s presidency of a body committed to non-proliferation was a travesty, given that “the regime was responsible for killing countless of its own civilians, many of whom have been impacted by chemical weapons attacks.”

“Missouri Police Using Federal Loophole to Skim Millions in Asset Forfeiture Proceeds” by Michael Maharrey (Activist Post)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

[==
Missouri police departments do an end-run around strict state asset forfeiture requirements and skim millions of dollars from Missouri schools using a federal loophole to circumvent state law.

Missouri has some of the most strict asset forfeiture laws in the country. Prosecutors must get a conviction or a guilty plea before they can proceed with asset forfeiture, and all forfeiture proceeds must go the state’s public education fund.

But according to the ACLU, of the $19 million in cash and property seized by Missouri law enforcement since 2015, only $340,000 made its way into school funds. In 2016, law enforcement agencies only sent $100,000 to public schools, even though seized $6.3 million worth of property.

So, how are Missouri law enforcement agencies skirting state law and pocketing millions in cash?

A federal program known as “Equitable Sharing” allows prosecutors to bypass more stringent state asset forfeiture laws by simply passing cases off to the federal government. Using a process known as “adoption,” state and local law enforcement agencies circumvent more strict state forfeiture laws by claiming cases are federal in nature. Under these arrangements, state officials simply hand cases over to a federal agency, participate in the case, and then receive up to 80 percent of the proceeds.

“‘I’ll open up your face’: The routine of collective punishment in Hebron” by Orly Noy (+972)

=====—
Through A-Salaimeh runs one of the main roads on which Palestinians are forbidden from traveling by car. There are military checkpoints at both entrances of the road, called A-Salaimeh Street, which leads to the Tomb of the Patriarchs. In 2012, the army built a barrier that divides the street into two: a paved road for Jewish pedestrians and vehicles, and on the other side, a narrow, dilapidated passageway for Palestinians who are forbidden from traveling by car.

On May 4th, the army enlarged the fence it had built at the beginning of 2012 at the entrance to both A-Salaimeh and Gheith. The fence has a single gate, which the army said must be kept open between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. in order to allow residents to pass through. However, according to B’Tselem, for the past year the gate has been closed at various times throughout the day. Closing off the two neighborhoods is especially harmful to students, who are forced to take an alternative path that forces them to pass through a checkpoint, extends their journey by 500 meters, and passes through a dark alley.

On May 13th, as the students were on their way back from school, they once again encountered locked gate. The video shows some residents of the neighborhood – mothers of the students – standing on the other end of the gate, pleading with the Border Police officers to open it. The officers ignore the women. After a child asks one of them to open the gate, an officer responds by yelling “I will open your face.” An Arabic-speaking officer threatens one of the mothers, telling her “If you continue I will drag you outside and arrest you. Try me.”

“Israeli Airstrike Hits Boat At Gaza Port As It Prepared To Meet 2018 Freedom Flotilla” by Emma Fiala (Mint Press via Popular Resistance.org)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

|-
Not long after the 2018 Freedom Flotilla — carrying “politicians, activists, journalists, trade-union leaders, artists and performers, professors, faith leaders, representatives of student organizations” — embarked on its journey from Scandinavia to the largest open-air prison in the world — Gaza — Israel attempted to thwart its plans by striking a boat in Gaza City that was preparing to meet the flotilla upon its arrival.

No casualties have been reported from the Israeli attack this Wednesday.

The 2018 Freedom Flotilla is part of a movement to demonstrate solidarity with Gaza, in an attempt to break Israel’s illegal blockade by transporting activists to the Strip, drawing international media attention to the humanitarian crisis there in the process. This year’s flotilla hopes its voyage “will open the channels for others to travel to Palestine and, more importantly, for the Palestinian people to use their own territorial waters for fishing, other maritime resources, travel, exports and imports.”…

Locals claim the boat was targeted because it was planning to meet the flotilla on its way to Gaza. Israel maintains a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has prevented aid flotillas carrying food and basic humanitarian supplies like toilet paper, clean water, and school items like crayons and pencils from reaching shore during previous attempts to help the nearly 1.8 million Palestinians affected by the siege.

“Sarbanand: A “Dirty Dozen” Corporation Contesting Being Fined In District Court For Working A Farmworker To Death In Whatcom County” by Edgar Franks (Foodjustice.org via Popular Resistance)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

o–
On Wednesday May 23rd at 9:00am Sarbanand Farms is scheduled to appear in the Whatcom County District Court to appeal a fine that was imposed on them by the WA State Dept of Labor and Industries after the death of a worker on August 6, 2017. This is happening in a courtroom that normally handles driving citations. This is the level of disrespect we are receiving for a farmworker’s death in Whatcom County. We believe the WA State Dept of Labor and Industries has given permission to agricultural corporations and the courts to normalize the deaths of farmworkers by exploitation.

This past February, Sarbanand was fined over $150,000 for not allowing workers to take their rest breaks and lunches. Then, because the managers at Sarbanand were so cooperative, they lowered the fine by 50%! Despite this, the state did not see fit to punish the company for negligence when after 3 weeks with no rest breaks, they denied a farmworker medical care when he was feeling ill and then sadly passed away…

“The Conservatives have a new idea to attract young people to their party. It’s so tragic, it’s hilarious.” by John Shafthauer (The Canary)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

(((
The Labour Party has done an impressive job attracting young members. As of January 2018, Labour’s youth wing was about the same size as the Liberal Democrat’s total membership.

The Conservatives have done less well. And rather than trying to emulate Labour’s success – say by proposing policies that will actually improve young people’s lives – those cheeky Conservatives are offering [paywall]…. *DRUM ROLL*

…a discount at Nando’s!

Wow

The Conservatives are considering a complimentary discount card with yearly membership, according to the Times. This card would offer [paywall] savings on clothes, food, and ‘other purchases’. Which is exciting for young people, as the Conservative’s wage-squeeze could last several more years. Yay, Britain.

“Better ways to spend $4.5 billion” by Andrea Harden-Donahue (The Council of Canadians)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

[—-
There is a lot to say about today’s announcement that the Liberal government is ready to buy the Kinder Morgan pipeline and expansion for $4.5 billion.

For starter’s, no.

The majority of people are against using public money to bail out the Kinder Morgan pipeline, let alone buy the project out right. The decision puts us on the line to cover costs of further delays and failure to proceed in the face of legal challenges and on the ground resistance to the project.

Building the pipeline would violate Indigenous rights (over half of the Indigenous communities along the path have not signed an agreement or are actively opposed), is inconsistent with the Paris Climate Agreement and threatens waterways and the West Coast with a diluted bitumen spill.

And let’s be honest, we all know it will be way more than $4.5 billion.

This doesn’t even cover the construction costs for the new pipeline. Kinder Morgan estimated in December the full costs would be $7.4 billion while a former CEO of TransCanada suggested a $10 billion dollar indemnity would be needed to proceed.

Oh, and let’s not forget that, if should this all proceed, the new crown corporation, or the Canadian Pension Plan if Finance Minister Morneau gets his way from the sounds of it, would be on the hook for spill clean up costs.
