“Flushable wipes are NOT flushable” by ? (Friends of the Earth)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

I started research for this new campaign by looking at plastic pollution in our waterways. Especially in spring, I’m sure you see what I do – a huge assortment of society’s cast-offs littering the banks of lakes, rivers, and streams.

It didn’t take long to zero in on so-called flushables – many wipes are made, in part or full, from synthetic fibers which can fragment into microplastics polluting aquatic environments and entering our food chain. Other wipes are made of regenerated cellulose like Lyocell and Rayon which do not readily degrade either.

If disposed of inappropriately, say flushed down the toilet, these products can clog pipes, block drainlines and sewers and end up causing spills of untreated sewage into lakes and rivers due to combined sewer overflows.

One leading manufacturer of single-use wipes, Kimberly-Clark, estimated the market for “flushable” wipes in Canada in 2016 at about $20 million a year. (That’s $20 million for single use products that cost you a conservative estimate of $250 million to clean out of the sewers.)

By the way, many of the municipalities and organizations in Canada and globally who deal with waste water treatment have developed their own standard for “Flushability”. It’s based on their hands-on experiences in the sewer systems around the world. It differs from the standard for flushability developed by the manufacturers of wipes or, one wonders, by their advertising agencies.

So, I wonder who consumers trust for setting a credible standard – the hands-on team working in waste water or the Association of Brand manufacturers and their advertising agencies, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry? Friends of the Earth chooses the hands-on team!

With regard to the discrepancy between government standards, on the books (for now) and corporate standards, Whose do you think will prevail within the Corporatocracy?

“Facebook’s New Fact-Checking Service are Koch-Funded Climate Deniers” by Andy Rowell (Oilchange International)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

It may not come as a surprise that leading climate denier, Donald Trump, has made more than 10,000 false or misleading claims since he became President, according to factcheckers at the Washington Post.

As the Post reports Trump’s “tsunami of untruths just keeps looming larger and larger.”

Much of this tsunami of untruths will get re-posted on Facebook as fact. Those hoping that Facebook will accurately check Trump’s statements and clean up the torrent of fake news on its platform will have to think again, especially if you are concerned about climate change.

In what can only be described as verging on the bizarre, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has given the contract to fight fake news to an organization that pushes fake news on climate change.

According to reports in Think Progress and Grist, Facebook has announced that it was teaming up with, which is an offshoot of the anti-science media site, The Daily Caller.

The CheckYourFact website brags that: “Our mission is a non-partisan one. We’re loyal to neither people nor parties — only the truth. And while the fact-checking industry continues to grow, there are still countless assertions that go unchecked. We exist to fill in the gaps.”

In fact, the opposite seems to be true. As Think Progress outlines:

The Daily Caller, which has published misinformation about climate science for years, was co-founded by the science-denying Fox News host Tucker Carlson and is backed by major conservative donors, including Charles and David Koch, the billionaire fossil fuel barons who are the single biggest funders of climate science misinformation.

“Factory “Organic” Causes Dairy Surplus” by Marie Burcham (The Cornucopia Institute)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Patty and Brian Wilson own a 600-acre farm in Vermont where, with the help of family, they have milked a small herd of dairy cattle for 23 years. The Wilson Farm made the transition to organic dairy 15 years ago. The transition was an easy one, because they were already dedicated to grazing as much as possible and using few inputs associated with conventional dairying (e.g., frequent use of antibiotics).

After years of financial stability, the Wilsons have now put their dairy herd up for sale. While still milking approximately 45 cows, they fear their future as a family dairy may be coming to a close…

Like many family-scale farms, the Wilsons also have a strong bond with their cattle, even considering them part of the family. The natural side effect of this exceptional care is longevity and health in their dairy herd.

With such healthy animals, the calves born on the farm are often considered surplus. Historically, the Wilson Farm always made ends meet by selling their high-quality replacement animals to other organic farms. Unfortunately, as larger dairies have moved into their area, that source of income has dried up.

Large industrial dairies do not buy healthy calves from farms like the Wilsons’, nor do they raise their own. Instead, these operations purchase cheap, conventional cattle raised on medicated milk replacer containing antibiotics and, potentially, other banned pharmaceuticals.

After weaning, these calves are fed conventional GMO grains and hay treated with chemicals prohibited in organic agriculture. These animals are being raised conventionally until their first birthday. Sometime during the second year of life, approximately one year before they start producing milk, they are “transitioned” to organic management.

Meanwhile, baby calves on the Wilson Farm, and the preponderance of organic family dairies, receive the same quality of organic milk you would find in the grocery store and consume certified organic feed for the balance of their lives. This much more expensive process leaves ethical organic producers competitively disadvantaged.

“Amid Public Outcry, NOP Backpedaled on Glyphosate Use by “Organic” Hydroponic Operations” by ? (The Cornucopia Institute)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

At the recent spring National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting in Seattle, Washington, organic stakeholders shared their incredulity and frustration regarding disturbing statements made by National Organic Program (NOP) Deputy Administrator Jennifer Tucker, brought to light in April by the Real Organic Project, about the use of prohibited substances in “organic” hydroponic production.

Tucker, along with other NOP officials and staff, faced multiple questions about the use of glyphosate by hydroponic operations during public comments to the NOSB. Emotions ran high on all sides as Tucker claimed her prior statements were taken out of context.

According to Tucker, her previous statement indicating that a hydroponic operation could spray glyphosate or other pesticides on the land just prior to erecting a greenhouse and be immediately certified organic was not a statement of NOP policy. Instead, Tucker contended her comment was made in response to a hypothetical scenario.

“These questions—including whether the three-year transition period applies to all organic operations—are not hypotheticals,” said Marie Burcham, an attorney and Cornucopia’s Director of Domestic Policy, “They are essential questions of the application of law.”

NOP officials were asked directly by both public commenters and concerned NOSB members to clarify and confirm that no operation seeking organic certification can use prohibited materials, including glyphosate, during their required three-year transition period. They refused to do so.

Tucker defaulted to repeating the mantra that “glyphosate is not allowed in organic production” when confronted with what she deemed more hypotheticals. She emphasized that the NOP needs specific complaints against hydroponic producers or their certifiers before they can evaluate these practices against the regulations.

“The NOP should clearly articulate how it intends to enforce the rules. In abdicating interpretation of the law to certifiers, we’re left with an inconsistent application of the rules, which can unfortunately leave the door open for illegal practices,” said Anne Ross, an attorney and Cornucopia’s Director of International Policy.

“Guaido Admits Failure in Staging Coup Against Maduro” by ? (Sputnik)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

After the coup attempt against legitimate Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday fell apart, Guaido conceded that the opposition had miscalculated its support within the military, revealing in an exclusive interview with the Washington Post that they had expected Maduro to step down amid a groundswell of defectors within the military…

Asked what he would do if National Security Advisor John Bolton called him up with an offer of US intervention, Guaido said he would reply by saying: “Dear friend, ambassador John Bolton, thank you for all the help you have given to the just cause here. Thank you for the option, we will evaluate it, and will probably consider it in parliament to solve this crisis. If it’s necessary, maybe we will approve it.”

The opposition leader also said he welcomed the recent discussions of military options in Washington, calling them “great news.”

“The ‘Deal of the Century’: Two Con Men’s Job” by Elias Samo (Strategic Culture Foundation)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Yes, you can ‘judge a book by its cover’, especially if the ‘book’ is the ‘Deal of the Century’ and the ‘cover’ lauds two con men, Trump and Netanyahu. Furthermore, when two con men are involved, ‘Deal of the Century’ is likely more akin to ‘Theft of the Century’.

The ‘Deal’, presumably a road map for peacefully settling the Palestinian problem, was drawn up, ironically, by a small group of American Zionists responsible for the formulation of American foreign policy. The group is led by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son in law and senior presidential adviser, with help from John Bolton, national security advisor, Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State and David Friedman, American ambassador in Israel. Anecdotally, it should be noted that Netanyahu is a close friend of the Kushner family and used to visit the family while in the US and stay overnight, at times in Jared’s bedroom; perhaps making Jared an unregistered foreign agent serving Israeli interests. With such strong pro-Israeli input in drawing up the ‘Deal’, what does one expect the ‘Deal’ to be except a right-wing, Likudist plan to establish a Great Israel from the River to the Sea.

“NATO’s Stoltenberg, Satan’s ‘Man of Straw’” by Martin Sieff (Strategic Culture Foundation)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Satan, we read in the second verse of the second chapter of the Biblical Book of Job, can never just relax and take it easy. He is always on the go, always looking for more trouble to stir up…

And so it is with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg…

Stoltenberg’s two immediate deputies are vastly more experienced and formidable figures, both US military/strategic diplomats Alexander Vershbow and Rose Gottemoeller. His own background showed no serious engagement whatsoever with strategic issues, as one might expect from a small, usually peaceful and secure nation like Norway. The illusion of being one of the powerful and mighty of the world has clearly bred in him extremely dangerous, albeit absurd delusions.

Indeed, in the only serious life-or-death security crisis Stoltenberg has ever had to face, he and his government proved utterly worthless.

On July 22, 2011, Anders Behring Breivik, a hate crazed young Norwegian neo-Nazi, singlehandedly paralyzed the national security services by setting off a bomb near the prime minister’s house in Oslo that killed eight people. Amid the confusion, Breivik then traveled out to a youth camp of Stoltenberg’s own ruling Labour Party on a nearby island where he massacred 69 people, almost all of them teens or in their early 20s.

There was not a single armed security guard on the island. It was the worst mass killing in Norwegian history. Stoltenberg had been prime minister for seven years: The appalling state of the security services and of security for the summer camp for the children of his own followers were his responsibility as national chief executive and party leader. He was even due to give a speech at the camp the next day and was preparing it while the young people were being slaughtered. He was never held responsible for his shameful bungles.

“What Strikes Bernie Sanders as “Extremely Unfair” Is a Catastrophe for Millions of Palestinians” by Miko Peled (Mint Press News)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

JERUSALEM — “Palestinians are being treated extremely unfairly.” This quote by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) came to mind as I was watching the documentary film 1948: Creation and Catastrophe. The terms “fair” and “unfair,” and even “extremely unfair,” come to mind when children quarrel on the playground, or maybe in a family feud when parents are treating one of the siblings in a way that is “extremely unfair.” Not so when discussing a national catastrophe.

When we view what Zionists have done to Palestine, when we understand the sheer magnitude of what was done to Palestinians, no term short of “catastrophic” seems appropriate…

Ilhan Omar and Mike Pence

“Pence Tries to Dismiss Ilhan Omar on Venezuela, Fails Miserably” by ? (teleSUR via Popular Resistance)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Progressive United States lawmaker Ilhan Omar has called out U.S. Vice President Mike Pence’s implict racism and sexism for seeking to dismiss her comments in support of the legitimate government of Venezuela without engaging her on the merits of the argument.

Speaking to Democracy Now! Thursday, the freshman congresswoman had issued critiques against the U.S.-backed attempted coup in Venezuela saying, “”A lot of the policies that we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela, and we’ve sort of set the stage for where we’re arriving today. …. This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela, and it certainly does not help and is not in the interest of the United States.”

The response came in an interview with the vice president that aired on Fox News Friday, in which was asked about her comments. He replied simply that “she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

Omar was quick to point out the arrogance behind his dismissive remarks, saying; “Women of color have heard this before. Instead of ‘we disagree,’ it’s ‘she doesn’t know what she’s talking about.’ They have to make us feel small. This from an Administration that thinks climate change is a Chinese hoax.”

Of course, Ilhan Omar has to call ‘climate crisis’ climate change. Sheesh!
