Lawlessness / Ruined – part 55

“Max Blumenthal drops by the largest US military base in Latin America” by Max Blumenthal (The Grayzone)

An excerpt from the above linked-to report follows:

The Grayzone visited Soto Cano or Palmerola air base. This is the largest US military base in Latin America. It is the center of US influence not just in Honduras, but across the entire region.

And it’s really why the US is fighting so hard to preserve the corrupt and deeply unpopular government of Juan Orlando Hernández, because this country, Honduras, is strategically located. And so it’s a place where the US projects its power toward Venezuela, toward Nicaragua, toward Cuba.

In fact, during the 1980s, this base was a staging point for counterinsurgency operations by the US-backed Contras, overseen by John D. Negroponte, in hunter-killer operations that killed as many as 30,000 people in a covert war inside Nicaragua against the socialist Sandinista movement.

It’s basically a city where some 500 to 600 US troops live. Now they claim that it’s a Honduran air base, but people in Honduras consider that an absolute joke.

“U.S. Troops Back in Saudi Arabia: What Could Go Wrong?” by David Swanson (David Swanson)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

The First Gulf War back in 1990 was a big huge success. One of the things it accomplished was a major U.S. troop presence in Saudi Arabia. Muslims around the world were outraged. Bombs were repeatedly set off at Khobar Towers where troops were stationed…

n 2001, the World Trade Center in New York was destroyed and the Pentagon damaged. A year and a half later, the United States removed most of its troops from Saudi Arabia, leaving some behind with various excuses and under various euphemistic labels. When Barack Obama was president, the CIA opened a drone base in Saudi Arabia from which to murder people in Yemen with missiles from robotic airplanes. This, of course, stabilized Yemen which has known peace and prosperity ever since, or something. Now, in 2019, the United States is sending more troops into Saudi Arabia again.

What could go wrong?…

Now, moving on to the obvious, let me quote from Peace Science Digest: “Deployment of troops to another country increases the chance of attacks from terror organizations from that country. Weapons exports to another country increase the chance of attacks from terror organizations from that country. 95% of all suicide terrorist attacks are conducted to encourage foreign occupiers to leave the terrorist’s home country.”

I’m not aware of a foreign terrorist threat, attempt, or action against the United States, in which a motivation was stated, where that motivation was anything other than opposition to U.S. military imperialism. Statistically, religion doesn’t seem to have anything to do with it. If you occupy another country, people get mad — with or without religion.

I like David Swanson. But, like so many – a majority I think – on the Left, he absolutely hates religion. I didn’t excerpt the lines in which he makes that clear, so read the article for yourself if you wish to see what I’m talking about. He’s pro human rights, for sure, and that includes supporting people’s right to worship or not worship and, if they want to worship, to worship however they see fit – if they are losers. That’s the attitude expressed. I’ve read the first few pages of Stephen Gowans’s recent book about Israel (“Israel: A Beachhead In The Middle East – From European Colony to US Power Projection”) and the same intense hatred for (Christian) religion comes through. It hurts to be so supportive of people who kick you hard WHERE IT HURTS. They won’t answer to me. Also, they can, and do, ignore/disappear me. But they will answer to Jehovah God. (And hopefully their correction will not be fatal.)

Stephen Gowans would jump all over someone saying “Communism is evil. Just look at Stalin!” He would point out that anyone can be criminal and its not as if the West doesn’t produce a greater share of monsters than the rest of the world. And besides, When it comes to official enemies of the ruling classes of the West, misdeeds by them will be both manufactured and, where real, exaggerated and we therefore shouldn’t just accept, without close examination of the actors and the context in which they acted, all that Western propagandists and those misled by them say about historical events and figures. Indeed, Has David Swanson or Stephen Gowans read the Christian Bible (and in plain English)? And if they did, Did they accept Christendom’s explanations and interpretations as being official and the only explanations and interpretations of the message and information in the Bible? I have read the Christian Bible – all of it. And I studied the Christian Bible with people who knew it and who did not come out of mainstream, or fake, Christianity. Jehovah’s Witnesses may not be perfect (and I don’t believe that they are today guided by God) and I may disagree with them on some matters, small and not small, but I do believe that no other group can do a better job of explaining the Christian Bible and God’s message in it. Gowans et al hate ‘their’ Christianity. They don’t know mine. If they know what fake Christians say about my religion, then they don’t know it.

“New Electromagnetic Attack Against Venezuelan Power Grid” by ? (teleSUR)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

===== === =
A new blackout has just hit Venezuela, with at least 16 states reportedly losing power, including the capital Caracas…

The following is the full statement by the Vice President of Communication, Tourism and Culture Jorge Rodriguez: “The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela informs all the people that today, at 4 and 45 in the afternoon, a national event of interruption of the electricity supply was presented. The first indications received from the investigation in Lower Caroni indicate the existence of an electromagnetic attack that sought to affect the hydroelectric generation system of Guayana, the main provider of this service in the country.

Fortunately, and after the focused aggressions during the months of March and April of this year, the Bolivarian Government has implemented protection and security protocols that allow us to ensure that we are already in the reconnection process to restore the electric power service in the shortest possible time.

At the same time, we have activated, through the Electric General Staff, the CEO, and the corresponding ministries, the mechanisms to meet the contingencies in the supply of drinking water, the provision of transport services and the monitoring and approach of any situation in our health centers. We also inform that we have ordered the deployment of the competent security agencies to guarantee the peace and tranquility of the entire population. Those who have attacked the noble people of Venezuela in every possible way and in a systematic way will once again know about the temper and courage that, in the midst of the difficulties, we have shown as the daughters and sons of our Liberator Simón Bolívar. We will win”

“US-trained troops shoot Honduran students protesting privatization” by Anya Parampil (The Grayzone)

Anya Parampil reports from inside a student occupation at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), where US-trained troops shot activists protesting the Juan Orlando Hernandez government’s attempt to privatize education and healthcare.

“Watch: The “moderate rebels” rape & stone Armenian woman to death” by Kevork Almasian (Syriana Analysis)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Erdogan’s support to the Islamist groups in Syria, particularly the ones that hold the Muslim brotherhood ideology had bloody repercussion on the ground against all Syrians, including the Armenians.

One day, I asked a wise Armenian man: what would have happened if Syria falls in the hands of the Turkish-western backed terrorists?

The answer was: another Medz Yeghern…

Today, I’m going to tell you a story, a horrible story that happened this month. There was a Syrian Armenian lady by the name of Suzanne Der Karkour in the town of Yaaqoubia in Idlib. She was 60 years old retired teacher who refused to leave her home after the occupation of the town by the terrorists.

On the 8th of July 2019, Der Karkour went missing inside her hometown which is located near the terrorist stronghold of Jisr Al-Shughour. On the next day, the residents found her dead body in a field.

After an autopsy was done on Der Karkour’s body, it was found that she was tortured and raped for many hours and later she was stoned to death, stoned to death!

This is what the so-called “civilized world” support in Syria!

These are the “moderate rebels” of the west and Turkey!

These are the “democratic fighters” who will bring freedoms to Syria!

These are the monsters who the mainstream media cover their crimes!

And I wonder, where was the humanitarian wing of Al-Qaeda, aka the White Helmets when this lady was raped for 9 hours and then stoned to death?

“The Roots of Evil: Right-Wing Israeli Settler Group Accuses Palestinians of Land Theft” by Miko Peled (Mint Press News)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Jerusalem — In a move designed to shock Israeli settlers in the West Bank into action, activists from the right-wing settler organization “Regavim” hung Palestinian flags along the main West Bank settler roads last week.

Regavim claims that there is a Palestinian take over of Area C and that the Israeli government is not doing enough to fight it. The organization’s PR stunt, shown in the video below, was in their own words “an in-your-face challenge to the הכנסת (Knesset) to enforce the law and halt the de facto creation of a terrorist state in the heart of Israel.”

In case it wasn’t clear from the outset, the claim being made by Regavim is that the Palestinians are attempting to annex lands that belong to Israel.

Regavim is a right-wing religious settler organization which claims its mission is “to ensure responsible, legal, accountable & environmentally friendly use of Israel’s national lands and the return of the rule of law to all areas and aspects of the land and its preservation.” That is the English version. In Hebrew, the group’s mission statement reads:

“The mission of Regavim is to influence the State to act according to Zionist principles … to protect Jewish lands and natural resources and to prevent an alien takeover.”

One of the leading figures in the organization is newly appointed transportation minister, Bezalel Smutrich. Smutrich, who is also a member of the Israeli government’s inner “security cabinet,” is a proponent of the Third Temple movement which seeks to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the thrid-holiest site in Islam, and replace it with a Jewish temple…

In his piece for Hashiloach, Eliraz mentions that in 2008, the Regavim Foundation made an appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court demanding that “illegal building by the Bedouins along the Jerusalem-Dead Sea highway be stopped.” At the time, European groups, particularly from Italy, had begun supporting this “illegal grouping.” They moved residents into actual homes instead of makeshift shelters, supplied them with solar panels and even built a modest school…

The location of Khan al-Ahmar has served as an important monastic Christian community going back to the 5th century A.D. The ruins of the St. Euthymius and St. Martyrius monasteries, both dating back to the 5th century, Masalha tells us, “are located in the Israeli colony of Ma’ale Adumim.” Because of its unique location, Khan al-Ahmar would later serve as a Khan, or caravanserai for merchants and pilgrims. Today it has become an impoverished Bedouin community which Israel is desperately trying to destroy. In fact, Khan al-Ahmar has already been demolished several times by Israeli authorities only to be rebuilt by defiant residents who barely manage to hang on thanks to international attention…

What Isreal [sic] describes as a Palestinian “land grab” is, in fact, Palestinians struggling to survive under the pressures of Israeli expansion. However, the entire discourse describes this and even Palestinian existence as a whole, as a violation of “Jewish rights.”

“Independent Jewish Voices Canada slams continued Government inaction on racist charity” by ? (Independent Jewish Voices)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

VANCOUVER – Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) is outraged by the federal government’s refusal to respond substantively to irrefutable evidence of violations of the Income Tax Act by a registered Canadian charity.

Yesterday, the government issued its official response to IJV’s formal, legal Parliamentary e-petition, signed by over 3,500 Canadians, calling on the Jewish National Fund of Canada’s (JNF Canada) charitable status to be revoked due to their numerous, grave, persistent violations of the Income Tax Act. The government’s response was simply a reiteration of the same response IJV and other concerned parties have been receiving from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for decades — that the auditing process is confidential, and that the CRA ensures that registered charities are held accountable for violations of the Income Tax Act accordingly.

“My village is one of three villages that were depopulated in 1967, and with the aid of the JNF, illegally demolished by Israeli forces,” said Dr. Ismail Zayid of Halifax, a signatory to the comprehensive complaint to the CRA which formed the basis of IJV’s e-petition. “Today, lands belonging to my hometown of Beit Nuba, along with the villages of Yalu and Imwas, are covered over by JNF Canada’s flagship project, ‘Canada Park’.”

I signed the petition and I read with dismay the government’s gibberish response to it. But that’s what I expect from the fascists who, sadly, run my country.

“Hassan Diab calls for release of report on extradition that sent him to French prison” by David Cochrane (CBC)

An excerpt from the above linked-to article follows:

Hassan Diab and his supporters are calling for the immediate release of the findings of an external probe into his extradition to France over allegations of involvement in a 1980 bombing outside a Paris synagogue.

Justice Minister David Lametti received the report nearly two months ago — but the findings still have not been shared with Diab or anyone outside of government.

“I am terribly disappointed by the lack of transparency and the extensive delays in making the external review report public,” Diab told CBC News. ” I expected better than this from Minister Lametti and the Liberal government.”

Diab, a 65-year-old Ottawa university lecturer, was accused by French authorities of involvement in a 1980 terrorist attack which killed four people and injured more than 40.

He has consistently maintained his innocence. He was released in January 2018 after two French judges ruled the evidence against him wasn’t strong enough to take to trial. He was never formally charged…

A Department of Justice spokesperson said the Segal report will be made public but it’s still in the final stages of translation and review.

“Our government is committed to transparency in this matter. We are taking the time to review and translate the report, and a timeline is being developed for its release. We should have more to say on that shortly,” Rachel Rappaport said in an email.

Diab boycotted Segal’s review. He argued that it fell short of his demand for a judge-led public inquiry with full subpoena power, which would have allowed Diab’s lawyer Donald Bayne to cross-examine witnesses…

The release of a report critical of Canada’s extradition processes could complicate the Meng situation, though the Department of Justice denies the two are linked. Amnesty International said it would be “wholly unacceptable” if the Meng case is affecting the release of the Segal review.

Amnesty has been supporting Diab since his arrest more than a decade ago. It and groups like the B.C. Civil Liberties Association have been pressing for a public inquiry into Diab’s case and the immediate release of the Segal report.

“It is unconscionable to keep Hassan Diab and his family waiting a single day longer to see what Murray Segal has uncovered,” said Alex Neve, secretary general of Amnesty International Canada. “Without the report, it is impossible to understand whether there are officials who should be held accountable and whether there is now a pressing need for a public inquiry.”

I don’t know Alex Neve personally. Maybe he’s a good man. If he is, he should get out of the thoroughly corrupt Amnesty International organization and find work in an honest NGO, which might be impossible. Which isn’t to say that AI isn’t here helping someone who should be helped. But that’s what it does. It does good here and there while propping up the American empire and the entire American-led Corporatocracy.

“New Studies Raise Alarms About the State of Ice in Antarctica” by Dimitri Lascaris and Claire Parkinson (Dimitri Lascaris)

The blurb presenting the above linked-to show follows:

+++ +++ +
For The Real News, I spoke to NASA scientist Claire Parkinson about two new studies that have raised alarms about the state of ice in Antarctica.

One study shows that the gigantic Thwaites Glacier, which is the size of Florida, is at risk of collapse. The disintegration and melting of that glacier could raise global sea levels by half a meter.

The second study shows that, from 2014-2017, the extent of Antarctic sea ice fell to its lowest level in 40 years of record-keeping.
